Tigers split after lengthy break

Team currently sits fifth in the division

The Campbellton Junior A Tigers (8-10-1) were back on the ice for a pair of Maritime Hockey League games on the weekend after a break of close to two weeks.

The weekend before, two games were rescheduled to later this season, with their last game being Nov. 5 – 12 days before they hosted the Valley Wildcats (4-15-0), a game which they won 6-3.

The Tigers went ahead 2-0 just 3:33 into the game on goals by Luke Thorne and Kiefer Lyons with Benjamin DeJonge making it 3-1 Tigers by the end of the first.

After a scoreless second period, the Wildcats tied the game with a pair of powerplay goals in the third but the Tigers replied with goals by Justin David (2) and Tyler Pazin to make the final 6-3.Dejonge also added a pair of assists, as did Ryan Hackett while David and Pazin also chipped in with an assist each. 

Dekon Randell-Snow won his third straight game in net, making 43 saves.

On Saturday, the Tigers traded a fourth round draft pick to the Edmundston Blizzard for 20-year-old forward William Schofield, who immediately made an impact in the Tigers’ 7-3 loss in Grand Falls Sunday to the Rapids (7-9-2).

On Sunday, the Tigers were looking for their third straight win and fourth in their last five but it was the Rapids coming away with the victory and moving to within one point of the Tigers for fifth place in the EastLink North Division.

The game was tied at two after the first period with Pazin and Schofield scoring for the Tigers but a pair of Rapids goals in the second and three more in the third gave the hosts a 7-2 lead. Thorne notched his fourth of the season, unassisted, late in the third to make it 7-3.

Schofield and Pazin also each had an assist with Randell-Snow allowing seven goals on 44 shots in the loss, dropping his record to 5-3-0.

With four points in the two games, Pazin, one of the youngest players in the league at 17, sits second in MHL rookie scoring with 20 points in 19 games, including a league-high 12 goals. DeJonge is fourth with eight goals and nine assists in 19 games.

The Tigers now sit fifth in the division, four points behind the Fredericton Red Wings (9-7-3) and five behind the Blizzard (11-8-0). West Kent continues to lead with a record of 14-4-2.

The Tigers play a pair of games this weekend, Friday when they host the Summerside Capitals (13-1-4) followed by a Saturday night game in Miramichi against the Timberwolves (12-5-1).
